Showcasing the vibrant art that defined the musicians as well as artists who made psychedelic art, “Psychedelic Haze: Rock Posters and Handbills from the San Francisco Bay Area, 1966-1971” will open at the Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery on Nov. 16 at 4 p.m. and run through Dec. 12. The Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery is located on the lower level of the Braithwaite Building on the Southern Utah University campus. The Gallery’s hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays from noon to 7 p.m.
Featuring a series of vintage posters and handbills by the premiere graphic artists of the era, “Psychedelic Haze” spotlights the posters for the concerts produced by the legendary Bill Graham and Chet Helms of Family Dog Productions at San Francisco’s historic rock palaces: the Fillmore Auditorium, Fillmore West, and the Avalon Ballroom.
Artists represented as part of the Braithwaite Gallery’s “Psychedelic Haze” include Lee Conklin, Wes Wilson, David Singer, and Randy Tuten. The bands and musicians captured by these artists include the Steve Miller Band, Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service, The Byrds, Sly and the Family Stone, The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, and many others. This colorful collection of posters is more than nostalgic; it captures an era of music and the changes in the way people thought about art, culture, and society.
“Psychedelic Haze: Rock Posters from the San Francisco Bay Area, 1966-1971” will run concurrently with other exhibitions scheduled for winter 2015. The larger gallery at Braithwaite will feature the Southern Utah University BFA Showcase, displaying the art of the university’s graduating seniors from the visual arts program.
“Psychedelic Haze” runs in conjunction with the Senior BFA Portfolio Exhibition, which showcases the art of four graduating students from SUU’s Department of Art and Design.
